"LANDSCAPES ARE CULTURE BEFORE THEY ARE NATURE; CONSTRUCTS OF IMAGINATION PROJECTED ONTO WOOD AND WATER AND ROCKS" SIMON SCHAMA |
My paintings are of oils on unprimed hardboard. They are distillations of water colours done in situ in the Western Isles of Scotland. The continual interchange of these elements - sand, sea, weather and light - is the subject. I try to maintain a balance between 'seduction' of paint- marks and respect for the subject-matter so both may be simultaneously read and enjoyed. In a similar manner, the layers of paint create both illusion of space, depth and distant and pattern. The paint is applied thinly - brush strokes, drips, splashes and poured paint conveying and amalgamating to create movement and atmosphere to suggest the transience and interdependence of the sea and land. |
